Overview
We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Journeyman Brick and Stone Mason to join our dynamic construction team. In this role, you will bring expertise in masonry craftsmanship to a variety of projects, including new builds, renovations, and restoration work. Your hands-on skills and knowledge of construction processes will help ensure the successful completion of high-quality masonry installations that meet safety standards and client specifications. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work on diverse projects that challenge your skills and allow you to showcase your craftsmanship.
The Role
You'll work on a small, experienced crew on a mix of new construction, restoration, and chimney and fireplace projects around HRM and surrounding areas. You'll be trusted to work independently, and you'll help guide apprentices and labourers on site.
Duties
- Interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to accurately execute masonry projects.
- Use hand tools, power tools, and heavy equipment to cut, shape, and install bricks, stones, concrete blocks, and other materials with precision.
- Prepare surfaces and structures for masonry work by cleaning, leveling, and applying necessary adhesives or mortar.
- Perform renovation and restoration tasks to repair or enhance existing masonry structures, ensuring durability and aesthetic appeal.
- Apply caulking techniques to seal joints and prevent water infiltration in various masonry applications.
- Collaborate with project managers, architects, and other tradespeople to ensure project specifications are met efficiently.
- Maintain a clean work environment by organizing tools, materials, and debris regularly throughout the project lifecycle.
Qualifications
- Proven experience as a Journeyman Brick and Stone Mason with a strong portfolio of completed projects.
- Proficiency in using hand tools such as trowels, chisels, hammers, as well as power tools like saws and drills.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical instructions accurately.
- Knowledge of masonry techniques including laying bricks, stones, concrete blocks; restoration; renovation; caulking; and sealing methods.
- Experience operating heavy equipment safely for material handling during construction or restoration tasks.
- Strong understanding of safety protocols related to construction sites and masonry work environments.
- Excellent problem-solving skills with attention to detail in executing complex masonry designs.
- Construction experience across various settings is preferred; certification in heavy equipment operation is a plus.
Assets (Not Required)
- WETT certification or interest in getting it
- Experience with heritage or restoration masonry
- Experience mentoring apprentices
- Valid first aid, WHMIS, or fall protection training
